The region’s largest business sector is "trade, repair of automobiles and home appliances" at [50%], followed by heavy and light manufacturing [12%], third [9%] is the combination of "hotels, hostel and food service", "transportation and communications, travel agencies and tourism", and "real property operations, and rent". The strongest branch for municipality is light industry; represented by manufacture, textile, tailoring, food and tobacco industries, and construction.

Group "Herti" – A company held by: "Herti", "Raifen" and "Tim Shell". Production includes: aluminum screw caps; polish and lithography on metal sheets; thermal caps for wine bottles; manufacture of aluminum containers for food (fully for export in Germany); manufacture of jar caps; bottling machines manufacturing - export for Poland and Russia for stations for scraps of life (packing by foods and drinks).
"Lavena" The association cultivates around 200 decares of long standing, fully owned plantations, with the intention of growing to 500 decacres. In connection with this are and the basic perspectives development. Currently, the firm works with farming associations to aquire its necessary raw material.
Another branch of the association is focused on the manufacture of medicinal liquids and creams. They are currently selling to Russia and former Soviet republics and have intentions of marketing to Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
The company is also looking to developing perfume manufacturing for the Bulgarian market. For cosmetics, the company is looking to follow international trends by creating more natural (lowering synthetic ingredients) products. Its core exports are the ethereal oils and medicine and has ISO 9001 compliance. The association also holds the required license for a pharmaceutical laboratory.
"Alkomet" is one of the largest firms in the country. Specializes in the production of shaped aluminum metal and products from aluminum alloys. Almost 65% of production is for export.
Group "FIKOSOTA" a group of newly formed firms working within a single factory. The core activities of the group are the production and trade of electrical appliances, soaps, and washing agents.
"Shumensko pivo" specializes in the production of beer.
"Serdika" works in milk processing and production of milk products. Recently opened products to an outside market with a small amount exported to international markets /Lebanon, USA/.
"Domein Boiar" specializes in the production of wines and alcoholic drinks. And has had a positive financial history. They have opened into international markets with joint agreements for the export of wine to Russia, England, Scandinavian countries.
"Tropik" specializes in the processing of foods and vegetables and production of canned food. The operations are successful with recent production growth, increased assortment, and improvements in design and packaging.
"Rizov" The firm includes a mill and center agricultural seed cleaning. The operations are in connection with the development of agriculture and the possibility for exporting grain to international markets.
"Toni M" The firm works in the tailoring industry. It sells manufactured products under a brand name. The firm exports much of its production to Germany.
"Madara" is property of "SFK". Currently under a highly decreased staff, this company is working to completely change its operations.
"Han Omurtag" produces baked earthenware, terracotta glazes and wall plates.
"Highway – Black Sea" The association has developed a successful investment program for growing its technical abilities aimed at raising competitive power and capacity.
"Shumen" The Company focuses on high quality work while maintaining competitive regional prices. Future plans include updating the core technology and extending services offered.
"Water building" Core activities include: ecology, sewer construction and infrastructure development.
"Aniak" - The firm work under the guidelines of the World Bank for health care and the emergency medical care in Varna, Dobrich, Ruse, Razgrad and others –covering most of North-eastern Bulgaria. Projects include: the regional health assurance fund, village health services and others. "Aniak" participated in the contract for municipal pipeline construction in Shumen. They also work in repairing concrete blocks.
"Stroikomplekt" Specializes in building materials and furnishing. Their factory produces concrete tiles and group assembly of buildings. This is in conjunction with the building of a factory for the production of dry wall panels. The firm produces both locally and to outside markets - including Ukraine, Moldavia and Russia.
"Taita" The firm focuses on automobile transport abroad, along with the service and support of automobiles.
Municipality of Shumen has the resources for agricultural development. The availability of productive land (77,7% of available land in use) opens the possibility for the development of the food industry in the municipality. The natural resources are ideal for grain, vineyards, sugar beets, and stock-breeding (pig-breeding and poultry-raising).
A Bulgarian science institute working with stock-breeding, horse-breeding, buffalo-breeding and sugar beet development is located in the municipality.
The municipality includes a well developed market for village agricultural products. With a developed food industry and the presence of large amount of unused production capacity, there are possibilities for further market development. There is also excess capacity in local milk production, meat production, brewing, wine bottling and canning industries. Recent economic inactivity has resulted in low prices of agricultural production.
"Kabiuk" is one from the biggest agrarian firms in the municipality and has strong results in grain production and stock-breeding. The firm has been developing new practices; including using of new cultures, bio-fertilizing and seedlings of lavender. In the area of the stock-breeding basic purpose is supporting the breeding of horses, pigs and rams.
"Shumen les" is another large firm with operations in lumbering, forestation, cultivation of young wood species, production of paper goods, international hunting tourism and hotels.
Other major firms in this section are: "Brothers comerce", Hybrid center for pig-breeding and Poultry-combine "Kamchia".
The municipality has the possibility of unifying currently dispersed operations in the local food industry. The network could more efficiently combine food producers with processors in order to generate higher profits. It is the intention of the municipality to be a facilitator in developing such a network.
