Preserves

National historical archeological preserve "Madara"

The wealth of open-air archeological monuments dating from 4000 B.C. to the 15th century give reasons for researchers to call Madara the "Bulgarian Troyan". The most remarkable monument in the preserve is the unique rock relief Madara Horseman. The only in Europe, it is a model of old Bulgarian art and symbolizes the power and greatness of the Bulgarian state. The inscriptions around the horseman are written in the Greek language, revealing the entrance of three Bulgarian Khans -Tervel, Krum, Omurtag . The Madara Horseman is recognized by UNESCO as a World Hertitage site.

In the historical sciences Madara is well-known as a religious center. Found here are sanctuaries, Christian churches, chapels. During the 14th century, in the rocks of the plateau, the biggest Bulgarian rock monastery was created with over 150 chambers.

Today Madara is one of the most visited tourist sites in the country.

Historical - archaeological preserve "Shumen Fortress"

Rising three kilometers west of the city of Shumen is the Shumen Fortress which has existed more than 3200 years.

During early and late middle ages the Shumen Fortress was Bulgarian maintained and played an important role in the history.

During 1444, bout the time of the crusade march of Vladislav III Yagelo, the fortress was destroyed and burned down.

The Fortress is one of the most explored archaeological sites in the country. The fortress and the cultural architecture, homes and thousands of movable monuments bear record of the diverse functions during the different periods, predominantly during the time of the second Bulgarian kingdom.

Today the Shumen fortress is exhibited as an open-air museum.

National historical-archaeological preserve "Pliska"

Capital of the first Bulgarian state established from Asparouh. Relics from monumental architectural objects are situated on an area of 23 kmІ. In the archaeological museum, conditions of life of the villages, the materials and the spiritual culture from the period VII - X centuries are shown.

National historical-archaeological preserve "Veliki Preslav"

Capital of the Bulgarian state from 893 to 972. In the archaelogical museum are masterpieces of the Bulgarian Golden age: Preslavian golden treasure, the ceramic icon "St. Teodor", a golden stamp collection, authentic written monuments from IX - XI centuries.

Tracian Tomb Complex near the village of Ivanski

It's a newly discovered complex comprising two tombs in a mound near Ivanski. The tombs are dated back to IV c B.C.

Cultural Monuments

Tombul Mosque

A cultural architectural ensemble built during 1744. The mosque is the second largest on the Bulkan Peninsula. An operative Muslim church.

Church "Saint Tri Svetiteli"

Built during 1857 on the place of an old chapel with donations of the Shumen guild.





Church "Saint Vuznesenie"

Built during 1829. ?he mural paintings date from 933. Preserved valuable books, gold fabric shroud with pearls from 1776, as well as the icon "Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius", given by General Belokolitov on 6th of July/ 18th of July/ in memory of the liberation of Shumen. According to ancient custom in the temple are buried honoured the faith and the nationality Renaissance. Among them there are two khans Dimitar Muruzi 1766-1812 and Valerian Grigorievich Madatov 1782-1829.

Armenian Church "Saint Asvizazin" (Saint Bogoroditsa)

An inscription announces the time of construction 1834 from Armenian refugees. During 2001 it was remodeling and renovating with a new bell tower. In the courtyard of the church they take care of funeral/sepulchral marble slabs of armenian and donors from 18th and 19th century with inscriptions and sculptural decorations. In the church during 1849 Laiosh Koshut and his mobile ( ) Rojdestvo Hirstovo. In the vicinity of the church is the building of the armenian national center.

Museums

Regional history museum

Preserving over 150 000 museum pieces in eight halls. The exposition accounts for the rich history of the region from antiquity to the end of the 19th century. The museum posesses a rich collection of icons, coins, stamps and ( ) in hall "Treasure House". Thracian tombs from the 4th century to ( ) is the only presented in the museum on the Balkan pennisula.

House-Museum "Panayot Volov"

The house is one from the notable of the bulgarian national revolution Panaout Volov, today is in museum.

With original materials is reconstructed the atmosphere in which are departed the children and the adolescent years of the natives during 1850 in Shumen, Panaout Volov. In special built for the goal exhibition hall through material, documentary and photo material is revealed the life of the great bulgarian with accent on his activities as an apostle of IV revolutionary region for time of the April uprising.

House-Museum "Dobri Voynikov"

The house of the writer of the Bulgarian national revival, Dobri Voynikov, today is converted into a museum. The house, an arcitectural monument from the period of the renaissance, was built by himself. Here in the older house during 1833 was born Popov Voynikov - teacher and author of textbooks, music and compositions, conductor and musical critic, cultural figure and editor of a newspaper, play-writer and theatric, actor of the first bulgaria drama ("Stoyan Boyvoda")

In the exposition with original materials is restored the interior of the renaissance house. ( ) through letters, photographs, extracts from periodical print, ( ) of moments from theatrical performances and others is ( ) multilateral personality of Dobri Voynikov as well as the character of the age in which he lived and created.

Model of arcitecture. The exposition represents the activities of Voynikov as a musician and figure, theatric and play-write, publisher of a newspaper, cultural figure, teacher-inventor and ? compiler of textbooks.

House-Museum "Layosh Koshut"

Monument of Renaissance arcitecture with original, with courtyard of three level ( ) with high walls, the house is bound together with the bulgaria and with the hungarian history?. This is the house of the Shumen dealer/tradesman and mayor of the bulgarian municipality ( ) Dimitraki Hadjipanev, in which lives the leader of the Hungarian revolution Layosh Koshut for a time of in the city of Shumen. The restored interior ( ) of well-to-do bulgarian ( ) house is combined with the documentary exhibit retraces the steps of the Hungarian revolution from 1848-1849 and the activities of its leader Layosh Koshut. In special built of the purpose hall is placed exposition "Bulgarian-Hungarian cultural connections" where temporary exhibitions.

Museum complex "Pancho Bladigerov"

Pancho Bladigerov is among the most prominent authors of fiction which the city of Shumen is ( ) of Bulgaria and saints.

The house in which is made the first step in the music now is a museum. The rich documentary exposition is privy to of " " of the Bulgarian composer school it is combination with the restored ( ) of this home from the first decades of the 20th century. The evidence is the work cabinet and the first piano of the large composer. The complex includes another independent exibition "Musical work in Shumen: and musical concert hall. In the hall as well as and in the court of the house all year are organized concerts.

The city of Shumen is host to an international competition for young pianists and violinists of the of Pancho Vladigerov.

Complex "Founder of the Bulgarian State"

Built in honour of the 1300th anniversary from the establishment of the Bulgarian state. With the resources of the arcitecture and the sculpture in created the history of the first Bulgarian kingdom. Situated it is on 450 m. above sea level and is seen in from a 30 km radius.

Vuzrojdensko St. in Divdyadovo Square

The school is among the small completely perserved new Bulgarian schools with us. It is found in the courtyard of the church and was constructed together with the church during 1846.

Stud breeding farm "Kabiuk", village Koniovec

The oldest stud breeding farm in Bulgaria open during 1864. On the area are situated the only in Bulgaria "Museum of Horses", the casted residence of ( ) - "Museum of the Compound" and exposition of icons. For numerous bulgarian and foreign tourists organized attractions with horses and ponnies, tour of the grounds with hansom and riding of the race course.

The oldest building in Shumen.

People's Cultural Center "Dobri Voynikov"

The building of the cultural center founded during 1856, is built during 1898 for project of the French arcitect. In it is preserved the first theatrical curtain, drawn from Venetian artist Max Hagendoff.

The Clock Tower

City clock with by hand working clock mechanism, built during 1740. On it's face side is rich, ornate fountain with marble slabstone and text of Turkish language.

Built during 1774 from limestone rocks. The face faР·ade is richly decorated. Initially it was covered with leaden slabs from where comes it's name.
